Last night we had the opening for KRANK, the art show I posted about a few weeks ago that I'm doing with Dzia and Klaas Van der Linden. Considering the time we had to do the work and set it up we were all really happy how it turned out, we hung the work, painted the windows and I even managed to get a wall painted on the side of the Fish and Chips store!...

Anyway, I'll have the artwork and wall pieces up on my site soon but here's a bunch of photos of the work in the space and some other bits and pieces!...

Thanks to the Antwerp Deadheadz for the tunes and good times, Naomi for hooking the whole thing up, Dzia and Klaas for being rad and everyone who came out!...

The show is on at Fish and Chips, Kammenstraat, Antwerp, 2000 till the 8th January 2011 and is open Monday to Saturday 11 till 7...

We're also going to be in the space occasionally doing some live painting and selling the KRANK zine we made, as well as some prints and other bits. I'll be posting this on my twitter so be sure to follow me so you know when we'll be there!...

On Saturday my last expo of 2010, KRANK, opens at Fish and Chips Streetwear store in Antwerp, I've been working on quite a lot of new pieces for this, a slight change of direction including some things I've not really done before...

I'm going to be working on some installation work in the space as well as what I take along so will hopefully get some preview pictures up on Friday when we're setting up the show...

If you happen to be in Antwerp come by from 5pm on Saturday and check out the work!...

Fish and Chips street and lifestyle store present a selection of new work by these three artists.The show includes paintings, drawings as well as installation pieces inside and outside the space.

The artists will also be presenting a collaborative copyzine made especially for and available at the exposition, which will show a greater insight into all three of the artists, with unseen pieces, photos and various other work.

Tonight I was asked to paint some stuff on some models for a denim evening at the WeSC store in Antwerp and I put up a few prints up for the evening as well!... It's been a while since I've worked on skin but it was good fun and I think I'm going to have a new body painting project soon!... Thanks to all the models (it was plenty cold tonight so I didn't envy them, luckily the store was good and toasty!...) and thanks to the guys at WeSc for asking me to come along!...

Mark Goss Interview:

Global Location:  Antwerp, Belgium.

Mark Goss is a freelance illustrator and designer who graduated form design collage in 2009. He’s now living and working in Antwerp.

AP: What plays a bigger role in your artwork, where you live now? or where you were raised as a child?

MG: I think where I live now is more of an influence on my artwork, because I prefer to take inspiration and imagery from my immediate environment in order to make my work. I was brought up in a fairly boring suburb which I don’t think played much of a role, I have always found the need to explore other routes and places for inspiration.

AP: What inspires your art?

MG: My environment inspires me, at the moment I’m using a lot of religious and historical sculpture images to form my work. I’m inspired a lot style wise by tattooing, graffiti to a certain degree and other artists. Every time I see a rad piece of work; from someone I know or otherwise it makes me want to work harder to be better, pretty much as soon as I finish a new piece I’m sick of it.

AP: Do you remember your first experience of making art?
MG: I remember when I was quite young drawing a picture of my Granddad sleeping with his mouth wide open and thinking at the time that it was really good and that it looked just like him, I can’t imagine how bad it probably was!

AP: What was your most recent experience of making art.

MG: I’m working on a series of pieces for a new show using just black and one color, I’ve also been playing with some digital illustrations which I have made for tee designs.

AP: Who’s art are you digging right now? Who do you want to give a shout out to?
MG: There are countless artists that I’m feeling right now; Mike Giant is a major inspiration and has always been a favorite, his line work is second to none. Audrey Kawasaki paints the most ridiculously hot girls and James Jean is sickeningly good, also Thomas Hooper is pretty much my favorite tattooist and definitely influences me.

AP: What are some art related things that you cant live without?

MG: Black ink: I pretty much rely on it to form the basis of my work and can’t think of a nicer medium to work with.

AP: What motivates you to get out of bed every day and create art?
MG: A healthy obsession, I feel slightly guilty when I’m not working so it’s rare that I don’t feel motivated to produce new work.

AP: Do you listen to music when you work? If so, name a few of the tunes you rock out to.

MG: I like to listen to music all the time, I don’t deal very well with silence. I have a really varied musical taste so could be listening to anything from Seasick Steve to Tribe called Quest, as well as music I listen to stand up comedy a lot, Bill Bailey is on heavy rotation at the moment.

AP: When you aren’t making art, what do you like to do?; What are some of your obsessions or hobbies?

MG: I cycle pretty regularly but more often than not if I’m not working I just like to hang out, eat good food and enjoy a drink. I don’t get much time for a hobby but I recently received a harmonica so want to learn to play it!

AP: As an artist what are your thoughts on social media and the internet?

MG: Nowadays it’s impossible to ignore the benefits of social media and the internet, I try not to get too drawn into it though. I can’t stand pointless tweets and status updates and use it simply for updates on my work and events, I just hope that they aren’t too pointless. I think Blogs are great though and if I do have an obsession aside from art then it’s definitely reading blogs an unhealthy amount.

AP: If you had the ability to time travel, what advice would you have for the artists of the future?

MG: Probably to just stick to your guns and work as much as you can, it’s not an easy choice to want to be an artist or illustrator and I’m still figuring it out myself.

AP: Tell us something about yourself that Google doesn’t know about (yet).
MG: I make a mean omelet !…

AP: Thank you for taking the time to share with us the insight into your world.

I've been working on some screenprinting and I now have a few bits and pieces for sale in my shop here there's 3 different prints, a one colour print, an ink hand finished print and a spraypaint hand finished print as well(my personal fave!..)The prints are limited to 5 each and the hand finished ones are all slightly different as well!...

I also made some new tee's with the same design as the prints, for now these are only in White(black print) and Black(blue/green print) but I'm thinking about making some other colours as well, if you have any preferences please comment below and the most popular colour will get printed!...

I think they're a deal, a steal, a sale of the fucking century so if you've got some money burning a hole in your pocket, treat yourself!...

I posted a sneak preview on my twitter the other day of the Antwerp Deadheadz van that I recently painted and I've just finished editing a video that I made of it!...

This was a collaboration between myself and the band Antwerp Deadheadz. They asked me to paint their van and initially I was just going to make a short stop motion video of the painting but then we thought it would be nice to make it into a little narrative and include one of the band's tracks. So, we took the van on a little trip to and from being painted around the home streets of Antwerp...

I'm back from my amazing trip to Rotterdam for the Paper, Scissors, Stone Expo that I was in with David Shillinglaw and Otto Baum at the Singer Sweatshop Gallery. It was a really productive trip and all of us painted installation pieces, made some new work, hung our shows and even managed to work on a collaborative screenprint!...

I took so many photos of the week so I'm not going to show all of them but here is a little selection of the weeks activities!...

L'Attentart

I just got some photos through from the L'Attentart event in Strasbourg that I was asked to submit some work to. They took my artwork, printed it big then pasted it in a spot in the city. Every piece they used was labeled on a map so that you could find specific pieces or find out whose is whose!...

I wish I could go and check it out in person because it looks great, some rad artists doing original pieces on the streets as well as the printed pieces, if you're in the neighborhood then I would highly recommend it (The map is below should you need it)...

Yesterday I went to Park Spoor Noord for the Dam Jam, a live painting event that I helped organise alongside Art Space Leguit and Steve Locatelli. We only had a week to get it all set up but it turned out to be a really fun unofficial end to the summer (I think I can safely say that as the weathers been, well, shite!...)all the work was of a really good quality and it was rad to be painting alongside Mr Locatelli, Aerosol Kids, Bue, Resto and the Gent gang and everyone else who was in attendance!...

I Want Your Skull magazine issue 9 is a Magazine created by the late Ryan August R.I.P.

Ryan ran a blog specifically featuring skull based artwork, this was the ninth of the print publications that he had made to coincide with it and the first that I was really glad to be included in and it also features people like Thomas Hooper, Scott Move and Hydro 74. Sadly Ryan died tragically in a car crash not long after this issue was released.

I just got my copy the other day and the magazine is rad, it comes with a specially designed IWYS sticker and even a skull Bandana... Please go and order a copy and support his family:

Skull Balls!...

Not sure exactly how long I've been doing this blog thing but this is only my 100th post!... I think I need to be a bit more regular from now, we'll see how that goes!...
Anyway, after working on my pieces for the Dirty Fingers show I thought I'd take advantage of my first proper day off in a while and do a nice chill piece, I hooked this up in about an hour and a half. Not super happy with it but not super bothered either, was good not to have to think about it!...

I'm planning to make more pieces on walls soon, but for now I have some work to get back to for some upcoming projects, more news on those soon...

I'm really busy trying to get my work made for the Dirty Fingers show so haven't had the time to do much other work. I've been playing around with some digital work though and decided to make the Curiosity Killed the Cat piece below available as Tee's and Skate decks... I've also made a design especially for the Dirty Fingers expo, some dirty drippy fingers on the front and type on the back!...

Art Rebels isn't really one thing, it encompasses a creative agency; curating events and and social projects, a shop; where artists and designers are invited to sell their work, as well as a blog where they constantly update with interesting events and projects going on round the world.

I'm really happy to have been asked to contribute to their blog, I'm going to be using it as an opportunity to report on events, people and pretty much anything that might be of interest.

On Wednesday I went down to the harbour near Park Spoor Noord to see the unveiling of Steve Locatelli's (one of the artists from the Anything Goes show) massive piece that he'd been working on for a good few (pretty long) days!...

The Unveiling was to be screened on Belgian channel Een so it took a while to get round to the screen dropping, Dutch hip hop group The Opposites played in the meantime, but it was worth it when they finally got round to it and the piece is rad!...

The other week I went to check out the work of several Antwerp based artists, myself Amy, Gert from Art Space Leguit and my Brother and Cousin who were visiting took a spin down there to check it out.

The show was in a really nice space in Boechout, just outside of Antwerp city, the space is usually reserved for community projects but Bram, one of the artists at the show managed to convince the Mayor to allow him and the other artists to install their painting, prints and furniture...

I was really impressed with the show and it was interesting to see how other people curate their expo's, anyway on with the flicks!...

Anything Goes Expo...

Friday night we had the opening of the expo and it all went really well, the artwork got finished and up on time (near enough) and everyone who commented, to me anyway was impressed with what is technically as well as conceptually good work, which was nice!...

Obviously being near the hooker district we had a few klootzac's come by but they were moved on pretty sharpish, and we had the obligatory visit from the cops(what kind of show would it have been without them!...) but all in all twas a success and everyone had a good time (from what I can remember!...)

The show is open every Saturday and Sunday from 2 - 6pm so if you're in Antwerp make sure to come by have a drink and check it out...

The Last Night...

Last week myself and t' missis jumped on the train to Brussels to check out The Last Night at the Alice Gallery, the two man show of Husk Mit Navn and Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee). Both artists are particular favourites of mine and I wasn't disappointed, along with his work Husk Mit Navn boshed out some rad work on the gallery walls inside and outside and McGee came correct with his signature clusters of paintings, drawing and photos.

I've not had a chance to see either of these guy's work in person until now and it made me super inspired to make art. I'd love to own a piece from either of the two but I had to make do with a poster from the show and a copy of the Beautiful Losers book, the book supports the film about people like Barry McGee, Espo, Margaret Kilgallen and a bunch of other involved with Alleged Gallery in NY. I saw the film a while ago and just like this show, it's super inspiring.

I've been holding back on showing these but the first tee shirt from the range of designs I made for the Vaudeville Boutique in Antwerp is now in the store, the prints of the work are available there too... I've updated my website with these and some other recent projects...

Jardin Zoologique

Yesterday myself and the missis had a rare day off together with no chores to be done, so we decided a visit to the zoo was in order!...

I love drawing animals but always find the reference images online a bit dry and easily accessible to everyone so thought I'd try and get some decent images for some projects I've got in the pipeline...Here's my pick of the bunch...

Before the actual animals the entrance to the zoo is an amazing one, the zoo is right in the city next to Centraal Station and the architecture follows that of the buildings in that area...

Then onto the animals!...It was really cold yesterday but these fellas were loving it!...

Fooking strange looking babboons!...( I did see another babboon with a ball sack for a chin but didn't get a decent photo of him!...)

This baby elephant was hilarious, thought it was a monkey the amount it was climbing around, and falling!..

Cutty Sark...

Most of this work was done a while back but up to now I've had to be very secretive about it!...I produced a piece for the new and improved Cutty Sark Whisky website, which just launched over the last week...

The idea of the brief was to produce a piece which represented both the history of the Cutty Sark, as well as having some link to modern life in London. Just a quick one, I just finished the colour on this piece that I drew for my most recent tattoo...Which I'm about to get the colour put in in about half an hour!...

Might put some pics of that up when it's healed too!...

Gallery Days!...

I thought now I have my website that I'd use this blog more for more personal things that might be interesting and as I spent my sunday checking out some of the larger galleries in Antwerp on Sunday I thought I'd blog it up...

First of we went to M HKA which is the museum of modern art in the city, the building itself is rad and stands out blatantly compared to the other buildings in that district of the city...

You'll have to forgive the poor photos but I'm in desperate need of a new camera with a decent sneaky museum setting!... Anyway, these works had been rescued from a flood in storage, it was interesting to see the massively varied pieces from different exhibitions together!...

The toilets had a nice touch...

Although typically the artists toilet didn't have a sink!...Dirty bastards!...

The best part of the gallery (for me anyway) was this Keith Haring piece in the cafe, done in 1987 when he had a show here shortly before his death...If you've seen the KH film then you will have seen this piece in it, and it still looks as fresh as the day he did it!...

Next we headed over to the museum of fine arts where they have some amazing pieces dating from as early as 1300(maybe earlier, I didn't stop and check every one!...)

I love the religious shiiiiiit!...

There was some pretty morbid pieces which I was obviously drawn to straight away...

This piece looks like it could have been done in the last 10 years but it's over 500 years old...

The next few were in the modern art floor of the fine art museum and this piece was my favourite, again sorry for the shite photos!...

Cool to see where they restore works!...

Daughter of the Ram...

I've been working on this painting for a few weeks on and off, I always take photos of my pieces in stages so thought I'd post a step by step of this piece...

I had 2 canvas' laying around that needed to be used, first off I painted over the failed piece on the left canvas...

I normally work a lot tighter on drawings so though I'd start off with some space filling tags and simple iconography...

I carried on layering until I was happy that there was little black background left...

Next I started adding some detail, I decided that I'd use a drawing that had been meant for a wall which never happened(the one in the top left!...)...

More detail...

Black detailing finished...

Next I wanted to bring the detailed part of the painting out so I started blocking out the background...

The first colour was too dark so I tried again...

Added more spots which attach themselves to the background spots...

Once I had tidied up the detail around the edges I started adding some white to the detail to bring it out from the background...First the hair...

Then the roses...

And lastly the skull and face, complete with putting the whites in the eyes...

And that's it finished...

It's been good since finishing uni being able to free myself up and experiment with some techniques and mediums that I haven't used at length since my foundation!...There's definitely more of this to come...

Here's a walk through of the exhibition I was recently involved in at D'Ojos gallery in Antwerp, I was pretty happy with most of the work I got finished in the time I had, it was nice to experiment with some cardboard again!...

The collaboration show I've been working on for the last month is now finished, the opening was on Saturday and it seemed to go down well, I'll have some flicks of the finished collab and the studies and other work up on here as soon as I take some, and theres more on that here ...

Meanwhile, I now have my scanner in Antwerp too so I've been able to scan and update my website with some of the other work I have been doing recently. It's mostly just black inked work from my time with limited supplies!...There's a few tasters of the show and the updated site work here and more on my site here (in case you don't know!..)...

I'm currently in a group show at D'ojos art gallery in Antwerp...The show is based around a large collaborative piece using the theme of mythology and fire, theres going to be a few cultures represented so there should be some voodoo magic and some greek fire!...

While I was back in the UK the other week I got to start a piece that's been a long time coming...My mate Tony aka DJ Drama commissioned me to hook up a painting on a wall in his apartment and I got a chance(at last) to start it...

I try and draw as much as possible(even when I'm supposed to be doing other work) and standing around in my current money maker I get a fair amount of time to do so. Up to now I've been throwing away a lot(seriously!) of drawings and paper with doodles on them and though that rather than chucking them thought maybe I should keep some of them.

Another post loosely linked with the Alternative Press Festival, 'Publish You' is a book I posted about a while back which I have had a piece of work featured in. The book is full of all sorts of people who are involved in the alternative press world and was launched at the start of the festival.

There is some rad artists in the book including Kate McMorrine who I met at the Collaborama and got some new nice little zines from and Jimi Gherkin who is one of the organisers...

I recently participated in the Alternative Press Festival 'Collaborama'. I went down to The Miller near London Bridge and set up shop with some zines and posters.

The whole day was good fun and a collaborative zine was made featuring all the stall holders artwork done on the day, as well as anyone who happened by!..The day wasn't overly busy which ended up being really good as it gave everyone a chance to meet each other and I traded some zines with some rad people (thanks for that!...).

I'd like to say thanks to Jimi for organising the event and also thanks to everyone who came by to say hello or have a chat, I look forward to doing more of the same!...

After the zine sale there was an live illustrated story and music session by Resonance FM, which was really interesting...Props to all those who illustrated along, I'm glad I decided not too as it was too much pressure at that time of day!...

Been a busy few months finishing uni and even though I'm coming up for my degree show this week, hopefully have some exciting projects in the pipelines and can finally push the work I want to do...Including a whole lot more Curious Fiend work...

Before the Degree show this week at the RSA (oooh get you!...) my class exhibited at the D&Ad exhibition at Kensington Olympia and the stall (or whatever you want to call it) won best in show so big ups to all those in my class who worked so hard to put it all together...

I've been working on some developments of the typefaces I designed for use in my magazine, these are, fingers crossed going to be the posters I use for my degree show...

It's not all fun though, I had to go to see Regina Spektor in the Serpentine Sessions in Hyde Park...Hard work that was, and a horrible setting!...

At last...I've finished my degree!...Over the last few months I've been working hard on collating and designing Curious Fiend magazine which is now finally finished and available here ...

Anyway, I've been doing some other work as well and got a bit of backlog from not having time to post much up... This was a shoot I did with Johnny Budden AKA Sticky for the magazine and Alex & Cocco...

The last two flicks are part of the shoot, although not the ones used in the magazine, you'll have to get it to see them!...

Blank Canvas...

Blank Canvas was an event organised by some members of my class as a fundraiser for our degree show, basically they sent a load of random objects to designers and illustrators to be customised...There was some amazing stuff there by people like Jon Burgerman, Milton Glaser, Jonathon Barnbrook and KozynDan... My favourite being the battered skateboard (complete with chip fork!...)...

I did some illustration on the night that was raffled off as one of the prizes along with donations from Boxfresh, I also drew on a pair of trainers after I'd finished my illustration...

Heres a recent project I did to do with a prison visit, the idea is to make the whole process of organising a visit to prison as pleasant as possible. The pack is sent back and forth between inmate and family and once it is completely filled the visit would be organised, prolonging the visit by keeping the connection between the individuals open...

Lazarides ongoing plan to bring all the worlds street artists to London seems to be working, I always make sure to check out the shows at Laz and although I missed the Faile show I made sure I wouldn't miss this...Herbert Baglione is one of the super talented Brazilian artists whose work seems to transfer straight into the gallery...

This show's work is focused on the obese and the anorexic and he's basically poking fun at the people who will look at this work and not see themselves in it...

Can't go wrong with a bit of Lemmy and co!...Went up to Leicester to visit my brother and go and see Motorhead and they were as expected...fucking loud!!!...Saxon supported and they rocked too, the setting at deMontfort hall was a bit random but pretty perfect for some ageing rockers, and even though got a fat lip for the bargain was worth the bashing to see em....

Went down to check out José Parlá'a show at Elms Lester last week and was amazed at the depth and intensity of the pieces, they have layer upon layer of tags, calligraphy and abstracted lettering and as always you have to see them in the flesh to appreciate them properly...check out the flicks below or go have a look yourself!!...

JR's second solo UK show started this week and as part of this alongside the pieces and the video installation; Minette Street leading into Soho through piss alley was pasted up with images taken on his teams travels through Rio and the favelas there...Had a hard week helping out the guys from gay Paris to paste up the enormous photos and here is the result...

Paul Insect...Poison

This was a highly anticipated show considering Paul Insects last show was bought out in its entirety by one person before it even came to the private view...

Anyway most people would be accustomed to seeing a certain person's baby heads with surreal imagery where a brain would be and although these were still plastered in the former porn emporium in Kings Cross the work was more varied with Playboy Bunny Skulls and a Skeleton Table pastiche...Plus a tagged sofa which on the grapevine was used in something called Anal Boom 2,whatever that is!...

It's been absolutely ages since I last blogged anything, in my defence I have been being super lazy!(blogwise)....

In day to day work have been super busy however working in all manor of situations...The majority of which time I have been working on my 'curatory skills' , so the next few blogs are a rundown of my recent activities....(climbing, lifting and running...lots of running)...

First up this is now old news but I did get down to Todd 'Reas' James, Blood and Treasure show at Greek Street...Now I had near enough seen the whole show in Juxtapoz but seeing pieces as up front and personal after reading the story behind it made the show for me...

A Nightmare on Greek Street

The current show at the Lazarides Gallery in Soho is Ben Turnbulls 'A Nightmare on Greek Street' the show was a collection of sculptures and installation pieces depicting his view of American paranoia and violence with regards to T.W.A.T ( The War on Terror)...

As a rule i'd prefer political pieces to be a bit more subtle, but the typographic American college type pieces were super nice and the installations were pretty funny (not laugh out loud, Guantanamo isn't exactly humorous but nonetheless).

Anyway...Had battery on the camera for once so....

Squint/Opera:Flooded London

Friday night was the closing down party of Squint/Opera's exhibition Flooded London down on Exmouth Market, Flooded London is a series of five digitally produced images depicting the long term view of London's adaptation to raised sea levels...

With a massive turn out of people...(Possibly because of some real nice free belgian beer!) the night seemed to seal the deal on a successful and interesting exhibition, the pieces themselves especially were pretty amazing considering they're almost completely produced in 3d programmes, still not really my thing but good nonetheless...

Anyway, enough bollocks here's the photos...

First Thursdays

Thursday just gone was the first thursday of the month and that means late open doors in a whole bunch of galleries in the East end...

I went out to a few places for a look at some openings and also took advantage of a few cheeky free beers, first off stumbled across Hot Pursuit at the Standpoint Gallery an exhibition of pieces by young people in Hackney schools in association with standpoint education...The exhibition was real nice, theres something refreshing about work done by kids and some of it was really interesting and more thoughtful than some of the pretentious shit you sometimes see about...

The second show I went to I will not blog any photos, as I wasn't too keen on the work which even reflected in the atmosphere in the exhibition which was dry as anything, it was disappointing as the gallery is one I go to often and was expecting something similar to that which I have seen before...Plus the battery was running low on the camera and thought I'd save it...

Luckily found a real nice show of work just around the way by Kate McMorrine and Alec Strang showing in Concrete Hermit, the battery was running low but managed to grab a few shots before it died...

Lastly managed to get round to Stolen Space to see the Ronzo show they currently have on...This was a quality show especially the carved gargoyles of Ronzo characters which I would happily have around my house, the show had a good variation of diorama style pieces to canvases and sketches and the big cutout lettering in the middle of the room...As nice as it was the camera was dying badly so only managed one shot before the thing went to sleep, next time maybe i'll make sure its charged before I go on a gallery visit...

Pollocks Launch

Last night was the belated launch party for Pollocks, I went along to do some body drawing for the night, the night was basically an exhibition inviting a whole bunch of different creatives involved with Pollocks to get their work out there.

As always because of poor time management didnt get round to getting a piece up, but did some body illustration instead and my model Shona walked around showing off my work for the night. Twas a good and I think successful night, the beer flowed for free and now I'm smoke free I could keep on top of the stupidly long queues to the bar while others were out in the cold...

Some of the work on show was really nice and it was good to see some friends of mine exhibiting their work like my friends Chris Benns, Dominique Strouthos, Lauren Naylor and especially Amy Van Loon, Amy and Lauren doing the body illustration on the model alongside mine...

Decided against the after party for the exhibition and instead had a lock in at Nav's, don't really remember what we were drinking but egg and ham on toast goes down a treat after alcohol...Still not quite a trip to Spar though...

Scar Studios

As part of a film by David Reuben, I went down to Scar Studios in Camden to do some more body painting for a project he's working on.

Basically there was a bunch of musicians the majority of musicians involved being buskers found in various tube stations and asked to participate in a collaboration with others..

Random day but pretty cool, kinda reminiscent of a 60's orgy or something...check out the photos to see for yourself...
